Amber Selking, PhD

Founder of Selking Performance Group
Mental Performance Consultant

Career Highlights:
  • Dr. Selking served as the mental performance consultant for Head Coach Brian Kelly and the Notre Dame Football team for the 2017 season.
  • She works to emphasize the power of Mindset and Leadership to drive lasting change on athletic teams, in businesses, and in individual lives. Amber’s dynamic and personalized approach to enhancing performance helps clarify vision, create championship team cultures, and achieve sustainable results.
  • Amber received her PhD in applied sport psychology, with an emphasis in positive psychology and the effect of brain functioning on performance. Her research and applied work revolve around human performance including leadership, mindset development, transitions, masculinity in sport, and mental toughness.
  • As a former Division I college soccer player at the University of Notre Dame, where she graduated magna cum laude, and as a corporate human resources professional, Amber understands the mental toughness it takes to be successful in sport, in work, and in life.
  • With an expertise in human performance and sport psychology, Dr. Selking leverages her former athletic and corporate business experiences to challenge others’ current ways of thinking and unlock their personal potential for achievement.
  • Amber completed her PhD at the University of Missouri in Applied Sport Psychology, where she also received a certification in Positive Psychology. Her dissertation, entitled, “When the Lights Go Out, How Do They Turn Back On?: A Grounded Theory on the Transition Out of the National Football League,” integrated former players’ transition experiences into a 3-model theory that can be used as an educational/training framework or a crisis intervention model.
  • She also holds a master’s degree in Sport & Performance Psychology from the University of Denver, where her thesis assessed the correlation between mental toughness and leadership behaviors of Division I college football players.
  • Amber coaches teams and individuals to optimal performance in both sport and business, and believes in a strengths-based approach to optimizing human potential amid challenging environments. Combined, her expertise is in optimizing human performance by training others’ in how their brain works and how to use it to position them to be successful.
  • Her research emphasis around masculinity in sport has influenced her applied work, which predominantly revolves around the sports of football, ice hockey, and basketball. Dr. Selking believes that “the man under the jersey will always out-perform the performer,” and by understanding the fundamental elements of masculinity in sport, she challenges her athletes and coaches to better understand and tap into the power of the “man under the jersey.”
  • She is also a consultant for Positive Coaching, Inc. where they train coaches in the Power of Positive Coaching and how to “Win Kids With Sport!” Additionally, she worked on the world-class Mental Conditioning team at IMG Academy in Bradenton, FL, where youth to professional-level athletes, coaches, military, and business people are trained in the high performance mindset.
  • From the Locker Room to the BoardRoom, Dr. Selking provides keynote speaking, group training, and consulting. Working with Selking Performance Group is all about “Building Championship Mindsets” in order to synergize people, purpose, and systems to drive performance excellence.
