Why Camp Elevate?
Develop the people skills needed to be a great coach.
I walked into the coaching profession the way so many people do - UNPREPARED!
I mean, come on, I played sports all my life, loved sports...BIG TIME. I played at a high level in college, had good coaches...so I should be able to coach a team, right?
Well...yes and no…. It turns out that to be a coach you have to be competent - and not just in the X’s and O’s of the sport. You have to be even MORE competent in the people, management and the leadership skills necessary to build a positive and transformative team culture.
While there were some things I did very well, I found the more I struggled with people skills, the less I enjoyed my job - it started to suck the life out of me! The drama!!!!
Join our community of coaches from across all sports.
The other piece I noticed was how I lived in the athletic department with all these coaches and no one talked to each other. No one shared their experiences or their ideas. Because of this, I found it lonely and isolating to be a coach, especially when I was struggling!
Everyone was lost in their sport, no one reached out as a peer to help. So as a young coach, I struggled to figure it out and in the process made many mistakes.
These mistakes lead me to isolation because I was ashamed to ask for help.
Does this feel or sound familiar to any coaches out there?
As I shared my story, I found a community of coaches who related very deeply with my journey and struggle. Many wished they had this type of training much earlier in their career.
Coaching is hard when you ARE prepared and when you are NOT prepared it can crush you and the athletes you coach!
I have yet to see a coach get fired because they did not know their X’s and O’s. I have, however, seen many coaches get fired because their team culture is toxic, they are unorganized, they are poor managers and communicators, cannot connect with their athletes or they hate conflict.
Share: Give and receive ideas, support and lessons learned.
This was the beginning of my journey to help coaches by creating a community dedicated to being FULLY competent in the X’s and O’s AND in their people skills. We need both but we give most of our time, money and energy to the first, and in my opinion, it needs to be the other way around - people skills will make or break your career.
One of my greatest joys over the last 13 years has been experiencing this new world of working with coaches of ALL sports. There is a magic in the room that is only present when coaches of ALL sports gather and start to share ideas and support each other.
This is what I believe creates that magic elixir:
The coaching PROFESSION now unites where their sport had once divided them. There is power and magic in this unity!
At True North Sports we believe the Profession of Coaching is greater than the sport you coach.
